Natalie Isaacs and 1 Million Women

We talk to the inspiring Natalie Isaacs, Founder of 1 Million Women about how to start an activist movement on In The Spirit of Things.

Launched in 2009, 1 Million Women is now a movement of over 950,000+ women and girls (and growing everyday)

Natalie says: "The world needs a lifestyle revolution. It's easy to sign a petition or to put pressure on governments and march on the streets, which we have to do, but we can't do that on the one hand, and then live our lives with overconsumption on the other.

How we live each day matters. One small action at a time multiplied by millions and millions changes the system.

Never underestimate how powerful you are through everything you do."

Founder’s Story

A little over a decade ago, Natalie Isaacs lifestyle was very different. She was a cosmetics manufacturer, her life was all about over packaging and she thought climate change was someone else's problem.

But the very short story is she had an epiphany and changed.

There were several things that led to it but ultimately the thing that really connected was she got her household electricity consumption down by 20% and when she saw that she had saved a heap of money and carbon pollution she realised she was powerful. At that very moment Natalie took ownership of the issue.

That's what led her to start 1 Million Women (1MW) a few years later.

Natalie began building a global movement of women and girls. Her vision was to empower women everywhere to act on climate change through everything we do. Through the way we live, through every choice we make and through using our voices and our vote.

Natalie shares with us:

  • why climate change is the biggest issue of our time

  • why women, who make around 85 per cent of household spending decisions, are incredibly powerful when it comes to taking climate action

  • how to get start taking action in your own life

  • how to cut waste of everyday consumables such as energy, food, fashion or single-use plastic

  • why stuff can't make us happy and why less truly is more

  • how to inspire your family, friends and community to take climate action.
