Chaplain Gabrielle Gelderman Talks Climate Change Healing Circles

Updated: Jun 10, 2022

We talk Healing Circles with Climate Change Chaplain and Activist, Gabrielle Gelderman in our forthcoming series of In The Spirit of Things. Chaplaincy is adopting a very modern look and becoming much more involved in advocacy, activism and healing. Hear how Gabrielle is holding space for those working in grassroots climate change activism.

Gabrielle is a third-generation settler, born and raised on Treaty 6 territory in

amiswaciwaskahikan / Edmonton. She worked for years as a climate organizer and environmental educator on Treaty 6 and 7 land before becoming immobilized by climate anxiety and grief. Finding political and scientific frameworks of meaning insufficient in the face of such an unimaginable crisis, Gabrielle turned to spirituality and found herself going back to school to become a chaplain.

While pursuing her Master of Theological Studies at St. Stephen’s College, Gabrielle spent a year conducting research on climate grief with young climate organizers, and now works as a chaplain in both hospital and social movement settings. You can read more about her and her work at gabriellegelderman.squarespace.com.
