In a powerful display of solidarity and determination, over 400 injured workers have joined GIDII Advocacy's work to promote the "Shattered" movement's national march, demanding radical reforms to the broken workers compensation system. The movement has now gone national.
GIDII is committed to empowering workplace injury survivors through comprehensive advocacy training. Our approach focuses on developing strategic skills that identify and leverage critical systemic pressure points for meaningful change. By equipping individuals with powerful advocacy tools, we aim to challenge existing stigmas and work towards a future where workers' dignity and health are fully restored and protected.
The core mission remains unwavering: to transform the narrative surrounding workplace injuries, dismantling harmful stigmas and creating pathways for genuine support, recognition, and healing.
This aligns with GIDII Advocacy's work to end moral injury in systems.
Moral injury is the damage done to one’s conscience or moral compass when that person perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one’s own moral beliefs, values, or ethical codes of conduct.
In the case of Workers' Compensation across Australia what the system says it does and how it behaves towards injured workers and their families are often completely in conflict. We aim to help the system align with dignified and compassionate care, for everyone's sake: workers, families, insurers, regulators, healthcare practitioners and other stakeholder groups. It's time for change.
"Shattered - The Documentary" is a riveting series exposing a global crisis. It exposes the dark truth behind Australia's Workers' Compensation system led by workplace chaplain Kathie Melocco and through the eyes of injured workers, medical experts, and whistleblowers. This explosive investigation is sparking a national movement for accountability, revealing how a broken system is destroying lives. These true stories will leave you in disbelief and inspire action, shedding light on the courage required to fight for justice. What happens when you're injured at work could happen to anyone - and the truth will shock you. This heart-wrenching journey will leave viewers worldwide demanding change on a global scale. It is set for release in early 2025.
A Movement Beyond Politics
What sets this movement apart is its unique position of independence. The Injured Workers Support Team stands resolute and unaligned—free from union or political party constraints. This independence gives them a powerful, unfiltered platform to challenge the systemic failures that have left countless workers struggling.
Victoria: The Epicenter of Systemic Failure
The movement has particularly focused its lens on Victoria, where return-to-work rates paint a devastating picture of a compensation system in critical condition. These statistics are more than just numbers—they represent real lives derailed, careers interrupted, and futures uncertain.
"The Injured Workers Support Team (IWST) is thrilled to announce our partnership with GIDDI Advocacy. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to share our stories in the upcoming documentary, which aims to shatter the silence surrounding injured workers' experiences and drive meaningful change. A huge thank you to GIDII for doing such an amazing job of giving injured workers a voice and shedding light on their stories. Together, we all can make a difference," said Vasalia Govender Administrator & Nominated Injured Worker Representative.
National Momentum, Local Impact
With members spanning five states and territories, the Shattered movement is proving that the workers compensation crisis is not a localized issue—it's a national emergency. Each region brings its own stories of bureaucratic indifference, insurance complexities, and systemic obstacles that prevent injured workers from reclaiming their professional and personal lives.
Direct Advocacy, Real Change
The network's approach is strategic and direct. By engaging insurers and government bodies without the traditional constraints of political allegiances, they are forcing a conversation that can no longer be ignored. Their message is clear: the current workers compensation system is fundamentally broken and requires immediate, comprehensive reform.
A Call for Comprehensive Reform
The march represents more than a protest—it's a clarion call for a system that genuinely supports workers during their most vulnerable moments. The Injured Workers Support Team is demanding:
- Transparent and fair claims processes
- Comprehensive rehabilitation support
- Meaningful return-to-work programs
- Robust accountability for insurers and employers
- Holistic medical and psychological support for injured workers
The Power of Collective Voice
With over 400 injured workers standing united ( and growing daily), the Shattered movement is demonstrating that when individual stories combine, they create an unstoppable force for change. Each participant brings a unique narrative, but they share a common goal: a workers compensation system that truly serves and protects those it was designed to support.
Looking Forward
As the movement continues to grow, it sends a powerful message to policymakers: the time for incremental changes has passed. Radical, systemic reform is not just desired—it is essential.
The march is just the beginning. The Shattered movement is here, it is loud, and it will not be silenced until real, meaningful change is achieved.
